Conflict is central to our interpersonal and business relationships. Conflict is inevitable when decisions are made, priorities are established, and values conflict with business practices. Like or not conflict is a part of our business life. When a business is able to manage their conflicts constructively and productively, business culture can dramatically improve.
The business environment consistently changes with economic conditions, changing workforce and new standards and regulations. There should be disagreements and differing perspectives when business decisions are made, otherwise something important could be missed. Conflict can be constructive and help build a stronger foundation for any business. Debate and healthy discussion help create a strong foundation for any business. This constructive conflict can make your business stronger
Unfortunately, much of the conflict that exists in the workplace tends to be more destructive. Unhealthy competition, personality differences, defensive communication and the personal nature of these conflicts create a business culture that is tense, closed and anxious.
So how can you create this constructive environment in your business?
First, establish a comfortable communication atmosphere in a business that will encourage employees to be more involved with their surroundings. Employees will be more empowered to listen and contribute to the business culture when they are more involved with the business operations.
Second, move toward a culture in your business that accepts and encourages this healthy feedback. Establish feedback loops between employees and with your customers so you can make quick adjustments within your business.
Finally, create space for social interactions with all employees. When there is a positive social connection between your employees, the likelihood for conflict will reduce. When there is a mix of business and social communication, the destructive conflicts will become much less frequent.
Embrace the differences to create a stronger culture in your business.
